Teaching The Family Is of God

It went really well today. I showed the kids the video first so they could get a feel for the music and the words. They were glued to the TV, but I think that's mostly because we don't often watch tv in primary. During the video, I could hear a few of the kids singing along. I think that's because the week before I passed out CDs with all the songs on them. I think when they have that little extra help in their home it makes it easier for them to learn the songs. After the movie, we talked a little bit about families and the different make-up of families. I was a little nervous about venturing into this territory because I didn't want any of the kids to feel bad or get offended if I said the wrong thing. Fortunately, it went well. I went phrase by phrase to teach them the song. I'll explain it and if you have any questions, let me know.

Our Father has a family - I used my own family picture to illustrate the family. I joked around a little bit and told them that because I didn't have any family pictures of their families hanging on their wall I had to use my own.

It's me! It's you, all others too. - I made some signs to hang around their necks. There were separate ones for "It's me!", "It's you!", and "all", "others", and "too" each had their own sign. They turned out really cute. It was bright green lettering on black paper with bright green ribbon to go around their necks. I think they got a kick out of how bright they were. They sang the loudest during that part and I'm not sure if had to do with the exclamation point at the end of "me" or if they were just humoring me.

I taught "we are His children" without any props. I told them to think about how everyone of us is a child of God.

He sent each one of us to earth - I had originally looked for a picture of the earth, but the library didn't have one. They did have a globe though, so I used that.

through birth - I stole one of my little girls baby dolls and swaddled her up.

To live and learn here in fam'lies - I had them look at the family picture again.

God gave us families - Family picture again. I know, it's original. :o) This week though, I'm going to get family pictures of kids in the ward and use those for each family phrase.

to help us become what He wants us to be- I had a picture of the temple, because at such a young age they learn that that's what they need to do to go back to Heavenly Father.

This is how He shares His love - I cut out a huge red heart so they'd remember Heavenly Fathers love.

for the family is of God. - Again with the family picture.

In my humble opinion, I think it worked. They seemed enthusiastic and excited to learn it. I think having them involved is what makes it go so well. I'm always open to ideas to make things run more smoothly, so if any of you have any suggestions or things I can change, feel free to let me know.

I was going to post the "My Eternal Family" video, but it's on the laptop downstairs and I'm upstairs and sometimes don't ya feel just a little lazy? I know I do. So, tomorrow. For sure. I promise. :o)

I just thought I'd share an idea, in the chorus, I useda picture of a child, a picture of their parents wedding at the temple and a picture of the Saviro to illustrate becoming what he wants us to be. I also used pictures of the kids families and they seemed to like that.

Thank you soooo much for sharing your lesson ideas step by step. I was asked to teach this song to the kids by the primary president last week and had no idea what to do. It is Sunday tomorrow and I still had no clue. You helped out a ton! Thank you! Stop on by my blog too if you'd like. glennfamily3.blogspot.com
